Undercover Bridesmaid

A fun romp into the bridal scene
I loved the opening scene that segued into a meeting with the new Texas millionaire client. He wants a bodyguard for his spoiled daughter's wedding and the hotshot female bodyguard hates the assignment from the get-go. This is a film that immerses you in wedding saccherine and at the same time tells a good story. I laughed a lot. The movie wasn't exactly realism, but there was enough character development and mystery about who was threatening the bride's life that I had fun watching it.

Mystery, Romance Hallmark Style
A light romantic comedy, suspense, kinda who done it- or will do it, wrapped up around a rich girl's wedding party.

Brooke Burns(who starred in the fun "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year") is hired to protect and find out who's out to do in the young bride to be. As titled, she goes undercover as a reluctant bridesmaid, she has her own issues after being stood up at the alter. There are plenty of suspects among the family members, and a potential romantic interest in a hunky, younger man, Justin Baldoni. The ever watchable, but under-utilized, Gregory Harrison plays the patriarch.

There's some mild tension, action(Brooke Burns shooting a shotgun or running in high heels, pistol drawn; plus, she can do real push-ups!) and humor(although, nowhere near as funny as "Miss Congeniality") with well coiffured actors and backdrops; moreover, the mystery isn't totally obvious although the ultimate happy ending is.

Hallmark clean, but kids will find it...

Gift for Mom
I bought this movie for my mom. She had seen it on TV and she LOVED it so I got it for her!

UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar

Another amazing Rio card
This card was subject to many changes due to injuries to the fighters on the card and fighters taken off the card and put on other cards. Given the talent the UFC was left with they did a great job finalizing the card at the last minute.

Damien Maia vs Rick Story

This was Damien Maia's second fight at welterweight, and what a fight it was. He took it strait to Rick Story in the opening seconds, after multiple attempts to take down Story and get his back he was successful. He started off with a rear naked choke but it just wasn't doing the job, so Maia turned it into a neck crank which forced Story to tap.

Phil Davis vs Wagner Prado

This fight was a rematch from their first fight on the preliminary card of the Shogun vs Vera fox card August 4th which had ended in the first round due to a accidental eye poke that left Prado unable to continue. Davis controlled the entire fight, which was not surprising considering how much more experience he...

All of the fights were lopsided. They're boring to watch
All of the fights were one-sided because one fighter was always much superior than the other. The other guy could never pose a threat. The same thing happened to the main event, Silva vs Bonnar. Consequently, they're boring to watch.

In short, this DVD is not worth it. If you want to watch it, you should use Netflix. It's cheaper.

GREAT EVENT
UFC 153

This was an event that was held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil by the UFC that had all kinds of problems before hand. Like Brazil's own Vitor Belfort who pulled out of his fight with Alan Belcher to go on to fight Jon Jones. Also Rampage was at one point before an injury going to face Glover Teixeira at this event, which would happen later. Also along with Gonzaga's fight being pulled the original main event was cancelled after Jose Aldo pulled out with an injury. So another Brazilian would step in to save the event, Anderson Silva. In the other corner the always tough and never been finished Stephen Bonnar
.
Spoilers

DISC 1

1.DEMIAN MAIA VS RICK STORY-this fight ended quick and in the first round. Maia wanted to make a statement at Welterweight and he did indeed. He gets the takedown and takes Story's back. From there he goes palm to palm and cranks his opponent's neck so bad blood shoots out. Maia gets the submission victory...

Chicago 8

Watch this movie, it should be part every person's high school civic's education.
This film is entirely based on the transcripts of the trial of the Chicago 8.

The judge appointed to try the case was Julius D Hoffman (the ex-law partner of the standing mayor, Richard J Daley). When it became apparent that the jury wouldn't convict, he sentenced all the defendants and all the lawyers for the defense to terms of months to years in prison for "contempt of court", causing in each case a mistrial. This would allow Nixon's federal prosecuters another try at convicting the prisoners later. The court of appeals reversed the contempt of court decisions in 1972. The court of appeals reversed all subsequent convictions related to the case, in 1972.

Watch the film and decide for yourself....

Full disclosure: I was there, in Chicago, at the time and sixteen years old. The police were so violently inclined that while I was walking down the street with friends a police car ran up over the curb and three police jumped out with billy clubs. A couple...

chicago 8
i really enjoyed this movie, which is about an event in our time that was not a very shining moment. the film interjects real news clips into the movie.all the actors gave a stellar performance.. if you are looking for a good movie to rent..may i suggest Chicago 8.

Interesting movie recounting history of activism in America in the 1970's
A movie that grips your mind from the start. Its an account of some young political activists fighting for racial equality in the 1970's. The smart and beautiful Mayim Bialik gets less of a role in the film than she deserves. Proving herself a talent powerhouse in the Big Bang Theory as Amy Farrah Fowler and starring in her own show Blossom in the early 1990's her inclusion sealed the deal on it for me.

The Other Dream Team

A fascinating look at a team that overcame insurmountable odds to claim victory
Although I will only receive this DVD when it is released in Jan. 2013, I did see this on the big screen. This documentary is a fascinating look at the Lithuanian basketball team that won the Bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. It provides the back-story to how these athletes worked hard and ultimately, were on the medal stand in Barcelona. When Lithuania was under Soviet occupation, these same guys played on the "USSR" basketball squad. These guys tell the real story of what it took for them to succeed and the trials-and-tribulations they had to go through. Seems that Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead came in at the last second to fund them on their successful quest. The documentary moves between the players giving their story and American basketball players and announcers providing their input. If you love basketball and love a story about underdogs who struggle and get to the top, this documentary is for you. It does offer a primer on the process of how...

Riveting sports/political documentary will move you to tears
I was recently browsing the documentary film section at my local library and fell upon this. Didn't really know much about it but I was intrigued and so I decided to pick it up. So glad I did!

"The Other Dream Team" (2012 release; 90 min.) brings the story of how Lithuania, wiht its rich basketball tradition, was annexed by the USSR in 1940. The documentary starts with the basketball victory of the USSR over Team USA in the 1988 Olypmics in Seoul. As it turns out, 4 out of the 5 starters on that USSR team are actually from Lithuania. We then get to know those 4 players, told by present-day interviews of those players. As the documentary unfolds, we see how Lithuania coped during the decades of Russian occupation, and how in 1991 they won their independance, leading to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where, yes, the US brought its Dream Team (Jordan/Magic Johnson/Bird, etc.), but there was much more at stake for Lithuania. To tell you more would ruin your viewing experience,...

Excellently done!
This is a film about Lithuania and their 1992 Olympic basketball team.

It is a wonderful documentary! My 11 year old daughter went with me and she loved it as well (and she doesn't even play basketball.) This well depicts the struggle and triumph of a united nation, even when they weren't considered a nation by the rest of the world.

Talhotblond

YOUTH IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG
Thomas (Garret Dillahunt) works at a Michigan factory. He is approaching 50 and is an ex-Marine. He was a wife (Laura San Giacomo) and two children. He has trouble performing his male duties. The guys turn him on to Internet poker where he meets "talhotblond" a high school teenager (Ashley Hinshaw) who comes on to Thomas. He lies to her and falls in love with a girl he has never meet. She also flirts with Brian (Brando Eaton) a co-worker who is a player. From here on out, the plot is easy to figure out, especially with the teaser/spoiler opening scene.

This film, based on a true story, is better than "Catfish." It is a true life dark comedy.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs or nudity. Near Sex.

Gripping: a Graphic Depiction of Obsession and Delusion
This psychological thriller is based on the true story of the "Marine Sniper Case" as it has come to be called. The film wonderfully portrays the allure of a different and more exciting life; escape from the seeming boredom of the everyday humdrum existence. Fifty-year-old Thomas Montgomery works at a factory in Michigan, has a loving but sometimes preoccupied wife and two young daughters. Once a month, Thomas joins the guys from his work in a game of poker. When the men invite Thomas to play poker with them online, he is immediately intrigued. Accessing the site, Thomas is distracted by an invitation from a high school teenager to chat. Online flirtation slowly but inexorably builds to an explosive and heartwrenching obsession that will destroy many lives and reveal a twisted web of lies and manipulation too cruel to be imagined.

This movie is riveting in its unflinching portrayal of obsession. I particularly appreciate that the story did not resort to shameful...

Not exactly what I expected
I had seen some media hype about the movie and decided to give it a try. It is an intended for older audiences story of interaction with younger lovers and the results. I personally didn't find the plot or the acting to be anything special

China Heavyweight

China Heavyweight takes us into the lives of rural kids hoping for global success
THE WEALTH GAP is emerging as one of the biggest political, cultural and moral issues of our era. Not only is America's wealth gap widening until upward mobility seems impossible for millions of poor Americans--but the global wealth gap threatens to keep world peace a distant hope. That's the larger drama that keeps us watching China Heavyweight, the latest feature-length documentary from director Yung Chang and Zeitgeist films.

Dirt-poor, rural Chinese kids are given opportunities at middle-school age to take a shot at wealth and success by competing in boxing camps. In 1959, Mao Tse Tung banned Western boxing for many years--as "too American and too violent," as we learn in the opening minutes of this new documentary. But boxing is back now in the new China! As you watch this film, you will spot dozens of American icons from framed photos of Muhammad Ali to the Nike Swoosh surrounding these communities. That rising public interest in China frees educators, trainers and...

A Great Look Into Chinese Boxing and Culture... (3.5/5)
China Heavyweight documents Qi Moxiang, former champion and current coach, as he goes to several rural China villages with Zhao Zhong, the boxing program director, to recruit those with the potential to pursue careers in boxing. It also documents these potential champions as they live life, train, and make life-changing decisions. China Heavyweight is a great look into Chinese boxing and culture.

This documentary has a sports theme, but delves deeper into the general culture of China, specifically those in the rural areas. It is a very interesting documentary, especially for those of us interested in other cultures and lifestyles; you don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this. It never abandons the boxing, although it does occasionally lose its focus. It's not a traditional documentary, as in it doesn't follow a simple structure, and is a little hard to follow at times; I say this because it never fully focuses on a single person and jumps around too often, and it feels...

Tarot art at its best
This film can transform your way of looking at the Tarot.

in my opinion, anyone seriously interested in reading the Tarot cards should see it - preferably more than once. Enrique's performance makes the Tarot come alive with his unique creative approach, inspiring you to do the same. his favorite is the classical Tarot de Marseille, but a similar approach can work with any Tarot deck.

A Tarot must
I highly recommend Enrique Enriquez's Enrique Enriquez-Tarology (film) movie to all lovers of the Marseille Tarot in particular and of poetry in general!

Farewell, My Queen [Blu-ray]

The Moral Disintegration of the Palace of Versailles at the Moment of Revolution
We have all wanted, at some point in our lives, to be a fly on the wall at a moment of historical significance. The fly - this time - is a servant to Queen Marie Antoinette played magically by Lea Seydoux. The entire film revolves around "her" point of view.

Sidonie Laborde reads books to the Queen and is summoned at all hours of night and day to respond to Marie Antoinette's whims. It is apparent that Sidonie, a naive girl, has a schoolgirl crush on the Queen but is emotionally hurt by the fact that her majesty is in thrall to another beautiful woman, la Duchess de Polignac. There is a telling scene where Sidonie opens the chamber of la Duchesse when the other is fast asleep and nude, and she examines the woman from almost a clinical perspective - trying to understand where is the charm? But the love triangle takes second place to the reality of the urgent news that the Bastille Prison has just been stormed by the people of Paris and its jailer mutilated by the mob...

A View From The Outside: A Fascinating Peek Into The Last Days Of Marie Antoinette's Court
There was a subtle power to "Farewell, My Queen" that completely snuck up on me. I lead with this statement because I'm not often surprised by movies. As I was enjoying Benoit Jacquot's portrait of the last days of Marie Antoinette's court, I was admiring the staging, the performances, and the lush settings. Jacquot places everything through the eyes of one of Antoinette's ladies-in-waiting. As she catches glimpses of the court in turmoil and the escalating political tensions, so do the viewers. As it is constructed, I felt like a voyeur to the unfolding drama--a partner, of sorts, to the lead character. As such, "Farewell, My Queen" is less of a historical recounting of the events in question as it is a peek behind the curtain. This approach lends an unpredictability to a somewhat familiar subject. Even though I have seen dozens of dramatizations of Antoinette, this one seemed remarkably fresh as it was only peripherally about the central subject. It does, at times, seem...

Beautifully shot - but emotionally distant - recreation of French palace life on the eve of revolution

Lightning Bug [Blu-ray]

Catching light and life in a bottle
Lightning Bug is a movie that is painful to watch, but only in a good way. The semi-autobiographical story of Robert Hall himself, this movie follows one young man's journey to find himself and perfect his art as everything around him is in a constant state of flux. However, life is rarely like Hollywood, and Hall makes no attempt to make this story a pat Hollywood `boy saves everyone and himself' story. Still, the characters themselves are very real, and the story is too compelling to rip yourself away from.

Both Bret Harrison and Laura Prepon give remarkable performances that show their range as actors. The directing and editing make the film fast paced and consuming.

Still, this isn't a feel good movie. It's someone's like told in naked and brutal detail and that's where the magic of this film lies.

Recommended.

A keeper
This is a movie that I bought based upon the synopsis and reviews by others. What a great find...it never lost my interest for one moment. the acting is top-notch, you hate the villains, and love the victims. The story is very believable and interesting. A lesson for all ..with an attitude of never giving up and the support of great friends, a person can change his life for the better. Give it a "watch"

Repressive Small Town Convictions in Good Coming of Age Film...
A hopeful future often travels together with the notion of dreams and aspirations. This is often depicted out of the perspective of youth seeking a direction on their journey through life. Often it is a difficult journey, which can even be harder to commence while parents, friends, and other people of various significance begin to affect the decisions of those who are coming of age. Lightening Bug touches on this very theme in a remarkably clever manner, as it deals with a young man's desire to leave his small Alabama home for a better life elsewhere.

A criminal suggestive opening leads the audience into think of why and who are the people involved in the scene. The identity and motive of the people involved in the wrongdoings are not revealed, but it leaves the audience wondering and thinking. These notions will leave audience's with an ominous sense of forthcoming trouble, but when and where remains unknown until the appropriate moment when the audience least expects...

The Man Who Knew Too Much (Criterion Collection)

"Too Much" Is More Than Enough
The Criterion Collection has done it again! For several years now, they've been filling in the blank spaces in the collections of film lovers, and now it's a newly remastered version of Alfred Hitchcock's 1934 thriller, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. As one of Hitchcock's biggest fans, I'm here to tell you that there has never been a really good print of this early masterpiece available on DVD before, to say nothing of Blu-Ray. Now, thanks to Criterion, we have both!

This was Hitchcock's first version of the venerable spy story; he filmed it again in 1955 with James Stewart and Doris Day (The Man Who Knew Too Much). Fans argue about which is the better version, and the director himself preferred the later one, but I love them both equally. There's something truly charming about the earlier film, and it includes one great performance that doesn't have a correlative in the 1955 version.

The story...

Nice Restoration, from someone who actually has the Blu-ray to watch.
We all know the movie, what everyone wants to know is how this new Criterion restoration looks.
I can tell you that this is the BEST The Man Who Knew Too Much has ever looked. An original Nitrate Fine Grain that was made from the Nitrate Camera Original Negatives was used to make this Blu-ray. Apparently the Nitrate Camera Original Negatives are lost or have disintegrated, so this is the best film master available. This Nitrate film Fine Grain was located in the British Archive.

The Gray Tones are perfect, no loss of details in the shadows or light areas.

The focus may not be as sharp as a modern film, but it is very good. Only the original camera negatives would give a sharper image.

The film condition is near flawless. i believe this was a wet-gate transfer (using a liquid that would fill in any scratches when transferring to video). The source film was fairly free of wear to begin with.

Image stabilization was used to steady the...

Very poor picture and sound spoil a good film
A very poor transfer of a very good film.Laserlight have done nothing to restore the print. The picture is dark and washed out.The sound is also very poor. The story has some great scenes, such as the finale in the hall where the assassination attempt takes place, but you have to watch a muddy picture with crackling sound.Wait for another version to come out.

Wuthering Heights

An Incomparable Feat of Cinematic Storytelling
I had the good fortune of seeing this film on a big screen at a New York cinema in the early seventies. Viewing a master print in a darkened theatre was one of the all-time highlights of my movie-going experiences. Yes, this is a truncated version of the novel, which I would urge anyone who hasn't already done so to read. It is on my personal top ten list for greatest novels ever. In my opinion this film is far superior to GWTW, which took home the oscar for best-picture in '39. Basically this is due to the source material. Wuthering Heights is great literature. GWTW was a best-seller, but not what one could call great literature. Catherine and Heathcliffe belong in the same literary company as Abelarde and Heloise, Dante's Paolo and Francessa, and Romeo and Juliet. I cant think of anyone who could have been better cast as Heathcliffe than Olivier. Merle Oberon also made for a highly believable Catherine. Flora Robeson also delivers a flawless performance. This is William...

Great cast, great movie
Wuthering Heights had the misfortune to be released the same year as Gone With The Wind, so was probably not given the attention at the time it deserved. The movie is only adapted from part of the book, focusing on the story of Heathcliff and Cathy. Of course creating a flawless movie from such great literature is almost impossible; there will always be critics who insist the book should be followed to the letter. But the movie is quite overwhelming; the acting is first-rate. Olivier makes a perfect Heathcliff, perhaps a little prettier than Emily Bronte imagined him, but it isn't Olivier's fault he was born beautiful. It's hard to believe this movie wasn't actually filmed in England, the scenery is quite authentic. Anyone who has ever loved someone they felt was a little out of their league can relate to this tale of love, jealousy and revenge.

How Can You NOT Like This Movie?!
You can never compare the movie to the book since a movie can't possibly incorporate ALL of the text from the author! William Wyler put together an excellent cast, fantastic, dark, moody scenes and beautiful music to turn out this brilliant film. The handsome and brooding Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier), the ravishing and haughty Cathy (Merle Oberon) along with the stoic, dull Edgar (David Niven)and the rebellious and pathetic Isabel (Geraldine Fitzgerald) turn this into one of the most romantic, haunting love stories ever.

This movie will forever be considered, for me, the epitome of the romantic film. When Heathcliff carries Cathy to the window to look upon the moors one last time as she's dying, my heart swells and tears fill my eyes. It's simply stunning!

Hollywood Mouth

Hollywood Mouth is a must see for Hollywood History!
Loved this movie! Hollywood Mouth has an amazing amount of Hollywood history packed into 75 minutes. I especially liked the beginning of the movie with the buildings from Hollywood's Golden area of the 1930's and 1940's, when actors' images were carefully crafted by the Studios.
The main character of the movie, Berlyn, tells the story of what happened to her when she meets two Europeans who claim that they have a Faberge egg that they want to sell. A deserted amphitheater makes a brilliant background for age-old stories of treasure, distrust and possibly deceit and the actors' ups and downs. Sam Bologna, as a tough guy who collects movie memorabilia, was a standout, although all the actors were very good.
This movie is very entertaining, gives you something to think about and a lot to take away with you. I highly recommend it!

If you are an aficionado of classic movies from the earlier days of Hollywood, you will enjoy HM
If you are an aficionado of classic movies and actors and actresses from the earlier days of Hollywood or just like movies, you will find Hollywood Mouth most enjoyable. The glimpses of pictures of movie stars and their homes are fun.

Hollywood Mouth tells the story of Berlyn Ferlinghetti being asked to help two strangers, Camille and Gary, sell a Faberge egg. Director Jordan Mohr cleverly weaves interesting facts about Faberge eggs into the script such as they were originally gifts for Czar Nicolas' mother, no one knows how many eggs were made. And did you know that "some were sold at Bullock's- Wilshire' where the stars shopped'". In the film Berlyn speculates that perhaps the egg might even have been stolen. She takes the Peter Lorre mask to a F/X technician to be duplicated. It is fascinating to watch the process as the technician goes through the intricate steps.

The movie is filled with wonderful photos of people such as James Dean, Peter Lorre, Cary Grant,...

Single Creek (Public Screening Edition) - NEW

Extremely Important to See Whether Single or Not!
This video opened my eyes to the struggles, joys, challenges and experiences of Christian single adults. The film looked at the issue from several different angles and did a wonderful job of being raw, real and genuine. If we are all part of the church family, then we need to understand what our family members are going thru. So it's very important for everyone to see this film, not just singles. I highly recommend this film.

Opened my eyes
This film opened my eyes to see that the single people in my church need my friendship and support regardless if I am married or not. It is very real and applicable. I love the song of the by the creek... amazing message in those words!

New Appreciation
I've been married for 14 years. I never really considered the challenges of being single. I just assumed it was a lifestyle choice. This film gave me a new appreciation for what it means to live as a single.

Brock Wilbur: 28 Years Later

Brock Wilbur is a funny guy.
One of the up and coming young comics in Los Angeles, Brock Wilbur brings it all to his first comedy special, "28 Years Later"--- filmed on his 28th birthday. An acclaimed screenwriter, author, and actor, Brock is one of those fresh, thought provoking comics to keep an eye on in the years ahead. The host of numerous comedy shows including Death of the Weekend, Tell and Show, and last year's host at the comedy stage of the LA Fringe Festival, Brock's special will make you laugh, and might even engage you into looking at life a little differently.

Smart, Brilliant, Hilarious, and Brutally Honest
Brock Wilbur brings a very unique brand of caustically hilarious, self-deprecating humor to the stage in an impressive film debut after only a year of professional stand-up comedy. His wit is rooted in a hyper-intelligent, visionary world-view uncommon of someone his age and experience in the comedy world. If this is his first (very well-produced) foray into filmed specials, I really look forward to seeing what comes next from this affable, giant jokester :)

When Mourning Breaks (Home Edition)

Touching, Real and Informative!
I have not experienced a miscarriage or an abortion so I really didn't understand what people go thru when they have these experiences. This movie showed me what those experiences are like both for the woman and the man and the depth of the pain that they go thru. It also gave very practical ideas on how to support others who are going thru this; what to do, what not to do. It was so amazingly touching and real and I loved the dramatized portions - really brought the stories to life. I feel this is an extremely important movie to see for all of us, whether we've gone thru these experiences ourselves or not.

Simply amazing!
Absolutely amazing! A much see for those who have experienced some type of loss of a child, elective or not! Would recommend to view at a youth group, support group, church group!

Jazz Singer [Blu-ray]

The movie that forever changed Hollywood:
Almost immediately after Warner Bros' huge financial gamble premiered in Oct 1927, other studios' concerned bigwigs frantically ordered their studios to immediately equip themselves to do sound movies. New careers were made -- and shattered -- overnight. If you haven't seen The Jazz Singer, considered the first "talking movie" (even though there actually were some earlier sporadic experiments) this is a video worth not only seeing but OWNING for several reasons: a)You see Al Jolson at his height. He was one of the first half of the 20th century's biggest stars and some of his stage charisma comes through in this movie's songs. Most of the flick is actually silent except for the songs. Originally he was only supposed to sing, but he ad libbed a few lines and the response was absolutely electric when audiences heard and saw him say these few words on the screen. b)The story's value: a Jewish religious leader's son, torn between tradition (using his voice for religion and...

80th Anniversary Edition features announced
In 1926 Sam Warner of the Warner Brothers decided to invest in the Vitaphone sound system. Don Juan was their first Vitaphone film, but it only contained music and sound effects. In 1927 Warner adapted the Samson Raphaelson Broadway hit The Jazz Singer into a movie and, this time, they incorporated vocal musical numbers in what was still a silent film for all but twenty minutes. Contrary to popular belief, audiences had heard music on film before, and they had heard dialogue on film before. What they had not heard or seen before were either of these things being particularly entertaining. When Jolson sings "Blue Skies" to his mother while adlibbing humorous comments, it all came across as so completely natural that people suddenly realized that sound on film could be entertaining and not just some novelty act. Despite its many shortcomings, including the predictable storyline, The Jazz Singer was a box-office success and a cinema milestone.

This new 80th Anniversary Edition...

God Bless Warner Home Video!
First, ignore the old comments in this string that refer to the old VHS release and have nothing to do with this truly awesome new 3 DVD set. The content is awesome. Even if you have no interest in the feature (which has been completely restored with sound direct from origina discs and a new print). The fact this set contains 26 early, never on DVD (most never on video) Vitaphone vaudeville and music shorts from 1926-30, a new feature length documentary on the coming of sound, a dozen more shorts, and loads more extras ---- for less than $30 on Amazon --- makes this a must have for any film buff.

Recognize that NO other studio is releasing this kind of early talkie material, nor shorts. WHV is to be congratulated for assembling a first class package in a first class way. Please spread the word on this set. If it does well, perhaps more early stuff will emerge from the vaults!

5 Broken Cameras

touching personal story of occupation
I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Slowly and painfully, with injustice heaped upon injustice, yet they keep trying to raise their children with dignity. Very moving.

My only criticism is that the subtitles are often hard to read. An easy fix.

Captivating!
The movie was so beautifully put! Finally something that shows the Palestinian's side of the story. I am so intrigued, and proud to announce that it will be played at a MLSA event at my law school.

5 Broken Cameras is a vital resource for anyone trying to understand the tragically undertold story of the Palestinian side of the conflict as opposed to the ubiquituous and disingenuous Israeli narrative we know so well in the West. Here we see the life of a young Palestinian boy growing up in the immense shadow of land theft and brutal occupation by the Israelis, a life unrecognizable in its misery when viewed from the comfort of an American lens of perspective. The bravery and resilience of the residents of Bi'lin in the face of unimaginable brurtality by their neighbors cannot be overemphasized. A must see!

The Tin Drum (Criterion Collection)

Book and DVD both worth having
I read the book two weeks ago and have just viewed the Criterion Collection DVD. I found the book to be complex, rich, insightful, puzzling, and surreal. I loved it. This film comes as close as any film could to the spirit of the novel and still be under 3 hours long.

Oskar is born to three parents who, like the Gdansk they live in, represent 3 ethnic groups: Pole, Kashubian, and German. He is fully conscious at birth and is presented with two paths for his life - one as a shopkeeper and one as a musician. While the people of 1930's Gdansk/Danzig feel forced to choose ethnic sides and mundane occupations, Oskar rejects the "stupid" adult world. He stops growing and learns to assert some control over adults through his drumming and vocal talents.

One of my favorite sections of the book is when he musically subverts a large Nazi rally. Not only was this well done in the movie but was worked into a bonus feature that had Grass reading the book chapter while we watch the...

Amazing!
I saw this movie back in 1983. I was only 9 years old but the movie to this day left an indelible impression on me. It was sad, yet humorous. Some parts make you go a little bug-eyed but that's all part of the surrealism of this movie. The young actor who played Oskar was amazing. Obviously you could tell he was just a child but I could actually see him as an adult as the movie goes on. I'm not in the habit of seeing foreign language films. In fact, I can honestly say that I've seen only a handful of them. This was my first German language film and I can safely say it was my favorite. Buy this video. You will not regret it. Its that amazing.

An Allegory of Germany
Schlondorff brought a superb cast together to tell the story of Oskar, who ceases to grow beyond his three year old size; a symbolic representation of Germany in the twentieth century. Oskar's mother is courted by a German and a Pole. Gunther Grass's allegorical solution to the wrenching of national borders and ethnic shuffling brought about by World War I is to show the mother, unable to choose between her lovers, choosing them both. One becomes the father of Oskar. Which one? Does it matter? Thus Oskar arrives amidst the confusion of the twenties, only to witness the degradation of the homeland by revolution, runaway inflation and finally, the steady growth of National Socialism through the thirties. Oskar mirrors the turmoil of Germany's struggle of the twentieth century, unable to free itself from its own dream of Teutonic superiority, unable to find peace in the national soul. View this work with an eye to the inadequacies of your own country and begin to see Gunter Grass's...

Love Me

An Attractive Young Cast Can't Quite Overcome A Lackluster Mystery
The teen friendly mystery "Love Me" seems perfectly geared toward viewers familiar with the Canadian hit franchise of Degrassi High (specifically The Next Generation) and ABC Family programming. Its young stars have all made a name for themselves in that environment and so a lot of familiar faces can be seen wandering around the fictional halls of Hampton Prep. That is the setting for this romance/thriller in which everyone is a suspect in the disappearance of a classmate. And as suspicions rise to the surface, danger may be lurking for anyone who uncovers the truth. Starring Lindsey Shaw (Pretty Little Liars), Jamie Johnson (the aforementioned Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Baby Daddy and Kyle XY), the lead performances are earnest and the actors are appealing. It's the central mystery that strands the entire movie in a kind of inertia. With a lack of real suspects, the resolutions are not difficult to see from the very beginning. So when the shocking...

YOU KILL ME WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY
This low budget film starts out with Melissa (Kristina Elliott) refusing to get into a car whose driver is not seen. She runs into the woods away from the said auto. You see no one, then suddenly she turns around and screams. It is not possible for it to have been the person in the car. Is this a clue? As yet you do not know if it was someone else, or that person popped into that location like a bad slasher film.

The scene changes to Sylvia (Lindsey Shaw) high school student who wants to be in love. She falls for Lucas Green (Jamie Johnston) a rich boy who dated the missing girl and has a high creep factor. They dropped so many clues about him being the killer, you know it is not him. Dayln (Kaitlyn Leeb) is the self centered jealous ex-gf. Harry (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) is the loser geek kid who makes cartoons.

The acting of Lindsey Shaw and Jamie Johnston reminded me too much of the caliber of acting we saw in the "Twilight" series nominated for a number of Razzies...

Blu-ray Review: "Love Me"
There's always room for another "psycho-guy goes nuts over uninterested ex-girlfriend" thriller. Audiences love these types of "who-dun-it" films. Anchor Bay Films isn't ashamed to participate in putting the next one out either. Their newest release in the genre, "Love Me," will air on the Lifetime Movie Network over and over again in a few months guaranteeing them a fat wad of cash for rights.

Sylvia Potter (Lindsey Shaw) falls head over heels for quiet rich boy Lucas Green (Jamie Johnston). Things get complicated when she, her friends, and family discover he's the prime suspect in the disappearance of a 16-year old girl (Kristina Elliott) in the neighboring town of Ridgedale. Lucas swears he had nothing to do with it. Can their love survive the investigation and turmoil? More importantly, can Sylvia survive through it all?

"Love Me" is exactly what it appears to be when picking it up in the video store or at Redbox. It's a PG-13 thriller which appeals to anyone...

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Complete Seasons 1 & 2

Fresh Prince Seasons 1+2
This item was sent back. Both seasons were duplicates. It was sent to me several times but I had the same problem every time.

Not 100% Satisfied
I received both the first and second season but I did not get all DVDs for the second season. Disc 1 was actually Disc 2, Disc 2 was actually Disc 3 and Disc 3 was actually Disc 3. Disc 4 was actually Disc 1 so i never got the last episodes for the second season. I don't want a refund but would like to receive the 4th Disc for Season 2 so that I can see those episodes. What should I do about this simple error?

Good but one issue
I really enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2 but my only issue was Season 2. Two of them had the same episode, the dvds were numbered wrong, and I was missing one dvd with some episodes on them. I just received the new one yesterday and I haven't opened it yet but I will give the verdict soon. Other than that, the everything has awesome.

Another Gem!
Tim Hawkins is just Tim Hawkins. You can expect parodies of songs and lots of funny in between. This one reminded me a lot of Full Range of Motion in the song to stand-up routine pattern. I thought it was well done. My husband and I were in tears several times. We just can't get enough of Tim. Buy it. There is all new material. Nothing was taken from a previous DVD. You can see excerpts of the video on Tim's website, but don't ruin the movie. Just get it. If you are even considering this product, you obviously already love Tim Hawkins or have at least heard of him. Get it. You won't be sorry.

Awesome show as always!
I always enjoy watching Tim Hawkins. I went to see him a year ago in Beavercreek, Ohio. I'm disappointed he will not be returning to Beavercreek again this year, but at least we have videos of his to watch! I would highly recommend Tim Hawkins for anyone that loves comedy. Even those that don't would probably still enjoy him. He always has cleans jokes, so it's great for the whole family

Hilarious as usual!
I've seen Tim Hawkins live and this dvd captured the hilarity of one of his concerts! I recommend it highly for family viewing!

Admiral [Blu-ray]

A hagiography of Yamamoto, painted in pink, sugarcoated and passing under silence all embarassing elements...
This is a very disappointing film about a great and eminent man and leader of men. Life and achievements of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet of Japanese Imperial Navy from August 1939 to April 1943, deserved a much better film than this sugarcoated propaganda.

The film is not entirely without merits. In its first half it shows very accurately Yamamoto as a very lucid adversary of Japanese imperial expansion, as the Deputy-Minister of Navy and later as Commander-in Chief of Combined Fleet. Yamamoto indeed objected both against the war in China in 1937 and the joining of Tripartite Pact, feeling that those developments would cause an unavoidable conflict with United States - a war which he knew pretty well Japan had only limited chances to win. In taking very openly this stance he put his life at great risk, but never changed his mind. His courage and moral integrity were never in doubt and by insisting on this aspect this film does a good...

Japanese view
A view from the Japanese side of the career of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Gives details on his resistance to Japan joining the Axis and how he was promoted to command the combined fleet to keep him from being assassinated, The film is in Japanese with english subtitles. The transations are much more accurate than the ones for the movie Yamato were. There are war scenes, but this is not what I would call an action movie. If your a true student of WWII who wants to see a good biography on Yamamoto, then buy this. If you want an action war movie, then this is not for you.

GOOD, THOUGHT-PROVOKING VIEW OF A GREAT LEADER!!
A great view, especially if you are at all interested in another view of the great leader .. ..

There are many views of ADMIRAL ISOROKU > He knew war with US was a folly after spending years in the US .. .. The war was dictated by the Army as well as national policy (see Germany in WWII & Iran today) .. ..

And, JAPAN was again embroiled in the last of three attempted coups by the start of WWII, so the attack on Pearl Harbor was actually a welcomed relief, unknowing what was to follow .. ..

When the final Japanese fundamentalist rebels were caught, and tried, in 1952, over 400 years of repeated civil unrest finally came to an end .. ..

I saw this movie on return flight to the States from the UK and enjoyed it so much, that I watched it again before landing .. .. Maybe not a masterpiece, as other reviewers have said, but VERY GOOD and well-worth having a copy .. ..

Midsomer Murders, Set 21

Macabre Midsomer
Midsomer County is oddly rife with peculiar mysteries and creative demises, but DCI John Barnaby is as gifted with powers of keen observation as his cousin, retired DCI Tom Barnaby. Sykes, John Barnaby's expressive dog, is also welcome! Neil Dudgeon, as the new DCI Barnaby, is an excellent addition to Midsomer, with his capacity for nuance; humor and seriousness shadow his countenance. The Barnabys are an old Midsomer family; in this verdant environment there are often recurring family resemblances (recall the funereal duo in first Midsomer mystery, "The Killings of Badger's Drift"). An amorous "look-alike" gardener was featured earlier in Midsomer, likely DCI John Barnaby is also good with plants. As always, the intrepid Jason Hughes is a wonderful foil as Detective Inspector Ben Jones, his wry humor adds another level of complexity to the series. The U.K. boasts many fine, underrated actors. Catch Dudgeon as a WWI vet/chauffeur in...

Set 21
My wife and I are huge fans of Midsomer Murders. We just watched all four episodes of Set 21 on Acorn Streaming. We were most unhappy with the "new" show. The new Barnaby seems aloof and has no sense of humor. It was sad to see Jones be his second in command. It would have been nice to see Jones move into the Barnaby role. He has the personality and could have carried it off. My personal choice would have seen the actor who played "Dangerous Davies" take over the lead role.

The stories were dull and uninteresting.

As an unwelcome parting shot; George the medical examiner anounced that he was retiring and that would be his last show. I used to purchase these sets on Amazon. I have them all. Sadly Set 20 was and will be my last purchase.

We miss our old friend John Nettles.

Is Midsomer becoming CSI?
Midsomer Murders used to provide a mystery to unravel at a slow, leisurely pace amid the lovely setting of an English village and its eccentric inhabitants. Murder was the propelling force for action, but the real focus was on characterization, personal interaction, the setting and the culture of the English village as interpreted in the series. In particular, the viewer normally faced with the carnage of popular movies and television could find respite with a cerebral journey as Barnaby and Jones unravelled the mystery of the day. Enter Season 21 of Midsomer and the gruesome visage of a dismembered body in Echoes of the Dead and giggling, invasive school girls in Death in the Slow Lane. Dark Secrets fared a little better but salacious elements, gratuitous sex and incest, occupied center stage too readily and too much. I have not viewed The Oblong Murders yet, so perhaps all is not lost if it contains some saving grace.

Ironically, the formidable acting skills of...

Guys & Dolls

This new Deluxe Edition is a disgrace to Sony Home Ent.
Yes, indeed! The booklet included is nice and glossy. Thanks! And the two documentaries added this time around are nice too. Thanks again! But what about the film itself? Has that been given the deluxe treatment as well?

Sad answer: Definitely NOT! As a matter of fact, this new "re-master" looks much worse than the previous DVD. That one was a very fuzzy non-anamorphic mess, but this new anamorphic one is just as fuzzy. In fact, when I put the old one in the zoom mode, there is no difference in focus and contrast whatsoever. And the colors are somewhat more warm and pleasant on the old edition. But worst of all, is that the new DVD is cropped on all four sides! There is quite a lot of more picture information available on the old disc, especially on top of the frame! So much for a Deluxe Edition! Shame on you, Sony/MGM-UA! Fans of this film - myself included - will have to keep the old DVD, and get this new one for the extras and the booklet. (The 2 stars above are for...

BEWARE THE BUTCHER...THIS RELEASE HAS BEEN ALTERED
For those uniformed potential buyers...note that the picture/aspect ratio for this specific release has been cropped (I've done identical scene comparisons with this deluxe release and the previous edition). In addition, the (2000) release is mislabeled (i.e. 2.35:1) and is actually presented in a 2.55:1 ratio (the original theatrical release format). Conversely, the deluxe edition (is labeled 2.55:1) and because of cropping, has been altered from the picture's original aspect ratio...in effect displaying a 2.35:1 image. The cropping issue has also been noted by other various reviewers, therefore confirming and/or lending credibility to this issue not being an isolated event.
In summmation...the product has been misrepresented. With this release, one does not get the complete picture...literally. I returned my deluxe edtion for a refund and will stay with my (2000) version, until the studio(s) or those responsible for a legitimate "deluxe" edtion will "do it right."

Brando in a musical? You bet!
A film by Joseph Mankiewicz

The image I have in my head of Marlon Brando is that of Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" and Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront". The opportunity to see Brando in a musical was just too good to pass up. "Guys and Dolls" is a musical about gamblers and women, but the story is much better than that.

Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) runs a high stakes craps game. Normally he does not have any trouble finding a location for the game, but the police is putting on the heat and nobody is willing to take the chance...nobody but one person who wants $1000 up front to host the game. All of the big mobsters are in town and they are looking for Nathan's craps game. Nathan makes a bet with Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando), a high roller who will bet on absolutely anything. The bet is that Sky cannot convince Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) to go with him to Havana for the night. This may not seem like that big of a bet, but Sarah Brown works downtown at the mission...

Reel Evil

Great Addition to the Found-Footage Genre
I've said this before and I'll say it again: I never get tired of the found-footage horror sub-genre. Granted, I've seen some stinkers over the years, but for the most part the found-footage category has treated me fairly well. Full Moon's recent venture into this reinvigorated area is REEL EVIL, a nice little fright-flick that is well done and serves up the scares by the bucketful.

This film impresses me on several levels. It looks good overall, the acting is top notch, the special effects rock, and even the gore is impressive. In short, it is a very entertaining thrill ride.

Probably the most excellent aspect of REEL EVIL are the scares. I actually jumped a couple of times when creepy things happened in unexpected places. The film does a great job of setting up what you think will be a scare...but then nothing happens; and then, when your guard is down later on, something happens that surprises you and makes you spill your popcorn. THIS is a great...

I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?
This film is a new twist on old "exploring the abandoned asylum for the criminally insane" horror film. This one incorporates the found footage genre. In this production a film crew is hired to film a documentary on behind the scenes footage of a movie filmed at said asylum. What this gimmick does is to allow decent lighting as the main crew had set them up. This gives us a more professional looking found footage film.

Kennedy(Jessica Morris)leads this group of daring film makers as they explore the abandoned establishment. You see occasional ghosts on the camera, but initially there are fewer ghosts than appear on my camera. After our heroes have a tussle with the main quirky film's director, demanding producer, primadonna actress and they explore for a bit, you are one hour into a 72 minute feature before the first scare.

The film needed to be longer, cut out some of the build up, and extend the horror ending. I kept waiting for things to happen and when it...

Great acting (for the most part), and that's it.
I love found footage films, specifically because the acting is so raw and realistic, and this one is no exception. Everyone (except the female playing the actress) was authentic, solid in their range, and did a great job of drawing you into the story, so the movie gets two stars for that. Unfortunately, that's where the positives of this film end. The plot has been done before, (and much better, might I add, by 'Grave Encounters'), and the special effects are atrocious. All of the apparitions looked to have been made using Microsoft Paint and then placed into the film with no regards to realism, or how it would appear to the average person. Considering that movies of this nature rely heavily on how well the SFX is implemented, I must say that I was very disappointed by what I saw. Lastly, there are too many instances where absolutely nothing happens, or the actors are walking around in (literal) circles, and this becomes tedious really fast.
The worst part of the film, however,...

The Foam Roller CORE POWER - 10 Minute Performance DVD - with Michaela Sirbu

Feel the Burn
This DVD has three level of workouts for the core: Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced. Although they are short 10 minute routines, don't let that fool you. I must say this is the only core workout I have done (& I have done many); it's the only one that has hit my problem area, that little lower pouch that many of us have. So far I am only doing the beginner routine & will stay with that until I feel it's time to advance. After I finish, my lower abs feel very warm. I have never felt that before & can tell it's a good thing. So, after doing P90X Ab Ripper & many others I feel confident to recommend this DVD. It seems the roller puts the core in the correct position to work the lower abs, which I can't get from crunching or laying flat. Although the routine works the entire core & obliques, I focus on the lower abs. If your new to the roller it may take a couple of times through to feel confident but you'll be glad you did.

VeggieTales: Lettuce Love One Another

oldies but goodies
I love VeggieTales and so I am aways looking for new ones. I tend to jump at titles that look new and miss the details that say that this is simply a collection of previous videos. They are all cute videos but there really isn't anything new on the disc.

A Great DVD!
This was a great collection of videos from Veggietales that bring together messages that for me as a parent are what I would love to have my children share with others. Like other videos, this set of episodes shares some great messages of friendship, giving and forgiving as well as praying and sharing, all things that I want my kids to emulate themselves. On top of the messages, my kids love the stories themselves. The characters in this are the ones that you have come to love if you have watched Veggietales in the past, but the episodes are so much fun and ones that my kids have already watched twice, and we just got it today. I particularly enjoyed the episode which was Abe and the Amazing Promise, but the other episodes are just as fun as well. If you are a fan of Veggietales, you will love this new DVD!

All veggie tales are awesome. My son loves them.
I would suggest this movie to any one that wants their kids to learn about the word of God.It a fun way to introduce them and it also gives parents a chance to help their kids get into the word.Shows good values..

Bad Boy Street

A lovely new Todd Verow film, safe for those afraid of Todd Verow films
Yes, Verow's films are sometimes too gritty, in-your-face, wild, or lo-fi for some. Not me, that's part of what I love about them. I love "Bad Boy Street" too, and I feel I can safely recommend it to those open-minded viewers who may yet be a bit hesitant when it comes to Todd Verow.

The film is shot entirely in Paris, France, and visually has a nice blue-grey look to some of the scenes, and is very pleasing to the eye throughout. There is more of a soft, celluloid look to Bad Boy Street than most of Verow's digital movies. The movie is basically a love story between handsome Claude (played by Yann de Monterno), a Parisian man, and Brad (played by Kevin Miranda), a younger sexy man who is not from Paris (you'll find out Brad's home later in the film). This is not a May-December romantic pair, but more like a May-August affair. Claude finds young Brad passed out cold on a side street, walks past, then has second thoughts and goes back to pick him up (literally) and...

WASTE OF TIME TO WATCH
So sad that I spent money on this DVD! It is unbelievable, badly written, well acted by the 3 main characters but very weak in storyline! Soundtrack is electronic beats and crummy soundbites that would have done better left out, The filming was beautiful as it showed Paris...... so that was the ONLY THING going for it! The lovers were handsome enough, and knew how to act, as well as the X-wife, but they had sorely LITTLE material to make it all interesting. This little film would have needed a whole lot more money spent on it's production value as the theme COULD BE interesting.

Superb-French-Style!!
I love this honest to goodness gay love traingle between fame and familiarity. An actor who knows he is gay and an older gentleman who knows who he is come together in this touching film. Don't let the title fool you!

Merlin: The Complete Fourth Season

"He is Your Destiny, and he is Your Doom..."
This is going to a rather odd review considering that season four of "Merlin" has the very best and worst that the show has to offer. On the one hand, it has some of the most sophisticated storylines, the highest production values and the strongest performances from its young cast that have thus far featured on the show. There is also far less filler (a great improvement on the last season, which seemed to be composed almost entirely of padding) and greater care taken with continuity and overarching plot-threads. On the other hand, it still suffers from the usual problems: a lack of meaningful character development, the irritating marginalization of its two female characters, and its stubborn refusal to let Merlin finally reveal his magical abilities to Arthur.

To recap this review in a nutshell: the first half of this season is the best that "Merlin" has ever been - but the second half falls apart, leading to an entirely lackluster finale. If you're not in the mood to read...

Merlin, Arthur & the Sword in the Stone

TYSM BBC!
Attention U.S. television producers; The BBC proves once again that Yes, it is possible to make a show that doesn't include tons of sex innuendo, bleeped or un-bleeped profanity, graphic, criminal violence, degrading and obnoxious humor and yet remain utterly appealing to adults. What Merlin does have is heroes and villains, magic and monsters, epic battles, exciting adventures... in other words just a great fantasy show set in an Arthurian milieu (kinda like Harry Potter meets Excalibur).

Currently in its fourth season, this series isn't losing an ounce of momentum, on the contrary it has even greater potential for future seasons, particularly when you realize that the setting thus far has been limited to a relatively small geographical sphere. Not to mention that these characters have the potential to become more interesting as they continue to age which is the exact opposite of most series that attempt to keep their main stars perpetually young. Oh and ya, this show...

Path to Paradise

GREAT INSIGHT INTO CURRENT TERROR MASSACRE
While I am shocked at the events of 9-11-01, I was not surprised. Why? Because I saw this movie! This movie exposes the vulnerability of the US and the determination of the terrorists. It shows how in 1993 the terrorists wanted to destroy many US landmarks and kill many citizens in one massive attack. This is exactly what came to pass last Tuesday.

All US citizens can gain an understanding of the dynamics of terror through watching this movie. In light of current events, it is the single most important movie for Americans to watch!

We were warned prior to 9/11
We were warned about destruction of the WTC eight years in advance. This HBO documentary proves this (circa 1997). Many lies have been told to us from our government about 9/11.

In the documentary the "organizer" of the 1993 WTC bombing, Ramsi Yusef, tells the FBI agent escorting him back to NYC that "Next time we will take them BOTH down". This documentary was shown on HBO almost daily up until the Sept 11, 2001 tragedy- BUT HAS NOT BEEN BROADCAST ONCE SINCE 9/11... Why is that? Why is HBO suppressing this powerful documentary? You must watch this!!!

Let's petition HBO to rebroadcast the documentary.

Indeed a wakeup call unheeded
An HBO production, amazing actors, superb dialog. A bomb-making
expert from Iraq attempts entry to the U.S. without a visa. He states he's leaving Iraq for political asylum in the U.S. The INS agent questions him a bit, looks over his fishy looking passport. She approaches her superior with the asylum application
and urges that "he should be detained". "Jails are full. You want to take him home?" her boss retorts. The film shows just how these terrorists jumped through about any and every loophole in the system under the guise of religious freedom. Bomb-making right in the apartment. Operating right under the nose of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. Anti-American propaganda tapes found in an apartment which, truth be told, is not against the law. And of course there was the chilling prophetic line at the end: "Next time we'll bring them both down." Absolutely worth watching again and again.

The Best Years of Our Lives

Billy Wilder said it best...
** UPDATE: This newly re-issued (January 2013) product offers NO improvement in picture or sound quality from previous DVD releases (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo). Beyond cosmetic changes to the box - this newest edition brings back the 1997 HBO Video interviews with Virginia Mayo and Teresa Wright and improves the look of the English subtitles - which were all left off the MGM DVD release in 2000. This 2013 release is a "must" ONLY if you want everything previously released - on one disc. Remember, the 1997 HBO Video issue was a "flipper" - part 1 of the movie and special features were on side one, part 2 of the movie was on side two. The 2000 MGM issue had NO English subtitles and NO special features other than an old trailer. The Samuel Goldwyn (2013) issue has the entire movie, subtitles and all the aforementioned special features on one side of the disc, with "no flipping" required. Still waiting for a Blu-Ray release for this outrageously neglected classic. (Older review about the...

A poignant drama that provides insight into post-WW2 America
"The Best Years of Our Lives" is a compelling dramatic masterpiece, and certainly one of the best films ever made. It's not as well known today as other pieces from the period, such as "Casablanca" or "Citizen Kane", but it is nevertheless a classic that deserves ranking with those same films.

This film paints a picture of the struggles of World War II servicemen that they faced AFTER the war was over. It was a more personal struggle of men returning home after being away for many years, and after experiencing horrors that their loved ones could never fully understand. They return home as changed people, and come home to changed lives.

The story of such a homecoming experienced by thousands of men after World War II is told from the perspective of three fictional characters: Captain Fred Derry, a bombadier in the Army Air Corps (Dana Andrews), Sergeant Al Stevenson, an Army infantryman (Frederich March), and Seamen Homer Parrish(Harold Russell). They happen to meet on the...

Comparisons of the two DVDs
The 4-star rating reflects the quality of the DVD only, not the movie itself (which is a 5-star). The picture quality of this DVD (the 2000 MGM-released version) is poor, much below the average expected from a DVD. The picture quality of the 1997 HBO-released DVD is slightly better. However, the 1997 version sometimes has annoying black lines running vertically in the middle of the screen. This 1997 release is the one that people complain about having to turn the disc over around the middle of the movie. Both the 1997 and 2000 releases are Full Screen format (contrary to what Amazon.com says about the 1997 release). Considering that the 1997 release costs about twice the price of the 2000 release, you would be better off spending your money on the 2000 release.

3 in One - DVD Karan Arjun / Om Shanti Om/Paheli

Read Me!!! NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES!!! ONLY 2 REASONS YOU SHOULD BUY THIS
When i saw the price I was excited. I figured that the price of this is the price of one movie. But what the cover picture doesnt show you is the big " FOR SALE IN INDIA ONLY ". This dvd is only supposed to be sold in india, not america, so THERE ARE NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES!!! how am i supposed to know what they're saying??? unless you're fluenty in 3 different dialects of hindi, or like me you can rip these off the disc and add subtitles via a computer program dont buy it. if computer or hindi arent your thing, dont try either. hindi is a language you take years to learn, and the computer work involves downloading 3 different freeware applications ( handbrake, dvd decrypter, format factory), only to then have to download srt ( subtitle ) files that you have to add to the video vai the handbrake application. just to do one of the 3 movies takes about 36 hours, because you have to rip, then stitch, then add the subtitles. all that download may leave you with a nasty virus if you...

Yakuza Weapon

Yakuza Weapon will blow you away!
As a big fan of Tak Sakaguchi films in specific and Japanese films in general, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Yakuza Weapon. Actor, martial artist and stunt man, Tak Sakaguchi made his name not just in Japanese cinema but action and obscure film as a whole with roles in such films as the cult favorite Versus, Death Trance, Battlefield Baseball, Azumi 2, etc. Now in Yakuza Weapon, a release by Sushi Typhoon, Nikkatsu and Well Go USA, Tak Sakaguchi plays Shozo Iwaki, a tough-as-nails Yakuza with a mad dog approach to battling his enemies. He is actually son to boss of the Iwaki family - one of the most powerful crime families in Japan - and as such, he is out to make a name for himself and usher the family into the new age of Yakuza business. But before that, he goes overseas to fight in a militarized zone, though the exact location and reason are absent from the film so far as I can tell.

When he returns to his beloved Japan four years later, much has changed. His father...

EAT MY BULLETS
The DVD box describes this as "hard edged" action. Simply stated, this is Japanese grindhouse.

The plot is fairly simple. Shozo (Tak Sakaguchi), who is a great fighter, but not the sharpest tack in the box, returns to Japan to discover his crime boss father has been over-thrown. He opts to get his empire back. About midway through the film he is transformed into the man you see on the cover. The action is over the top, sometimes 3 Stooges style. In an early scene a man steps on a landmine and uses it to blow himself up so he can soar through the air and land in the enemy camp.

The story includes bad hair pieces, lines from American films, school girl uniforms, pink ooze squirting from a cell phone, a nurse with Freddy's claw, and a man who dodges bullets. This is for extreme grindhouse fans who enjoy immature bloody movies. If you didn't enjoy the American "Planet Terror" or "Smokin' Aces" films, you should pass on this one. The comedy is called "manga style." It...

Japanese B-cinema at it's finest!
As with most B movies to come from Japan, this one IS NOT FOR CHILDREN.. it campy and extremely violent, loaded with nudity, gore, unbelievable acts of violence and perversion...this is an ABSOLUTE MUST for any fan of B-movies!

An enjoyable but sad look at the last days of C=

Really made me mad at just how dumb C= management was seeing the once great company on it's last legs - a must see for any C= fan.

Believe: The Misfit Pawn

Needed some tweaks but an OK story.
This was a nice storyline. Unfortunately it takes more than a good plot to make an endearing movie. With a few improvements, this could have been a decent flick. There is a rule that a story should also show not tell. This movie did both in a two scene sequence. We saw the scene then listened to the hero relate the story of what happened in that scene to another character. Not good for a type A personality like me. Then there was a song played and shots of the characters - shots from earlier in the movie. I don't understand why they'd need to repeat images. If a film is going to take a break to play a relevant song with lyrics that speak to the situation, I would like to see scenes that show new things happening - small things that don't need dialogue but allow me insight into what is going on to get characters from point A to point B. The ending came up like a freight train. I had no idea the movie was on the verge of the closing credits when the hero tells us in a speech how the...

WWII: Frank Capra's Why We Fight

Outstanding picture quality, but...
Rather than tell you about the contents of the films in this set (you can read other reviews for that), I just want to tell you what you're getting in this set from TOPICS ENTERTAINMENT. First of all--the picture quality: easily the best sharpest ever seen on home video for these films. The images are crisp and clean. If you already have these titles on dvd or vhs, you'll want to replace them with this set--it's that good. In addition to all 7 films (on 6 discs) of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, the set also includes two more WW II documentaries: "The True Glory" and John Ford's "December 7th". These dvds are also the best picture quality that I've ever seen on these films. "December 7th" is the uncensored complete 82 minute version. HERE'S THE BIG DRAWBACK TO THIS SET: Your set will come beautifully packaged with a dvd case inside a flip open outer box. The two extra dvds, however, come in plain white paper sleeves that are loose inside the case. The Capra "Why We...

A war that cost 60 million lives
A big part of General George Marshall's job during World War II was keeping up morale. Director Frank Capra responded to a call with the films offered here, but our boys overseas asked to see more of John Wayne kicking butt.
Lest we forget, Hitler was kicking ours. His attack on Chechoslovakia began with his conquest of Austria. His attack on Norway began with the occupation of Denmark.
His attack on Greece began with his attack on Albania and Bulgaria. His attack on the Suez Canal began with the invasion of North Africa.
Nobody could tell exactly when or where an attack would come, but we knew enough and had sense enough not to wait until Hitler was in our own front yard.
But elsewhere:
"Our many Jewish friends and aquaintances are being taken away in droves. The Gestapo is treating them very roughly and transporting them in cattle cars to Westerbork, the big camp in Drenthe to which they're sending all the Jews. If its that bad in Holland, what must it be...

Teenage Bank Heist

DOING THE WRONG THING FOR THE RIGHT REASON
Three girls rob a bank and take school mate Cassie (Abbie Cobb) as a hostage. The Redbox description tells you why which was a bigger spoiler than the opening scene which takes place 15 minutes into the film. Two of the girls Abbie (Cassi Thomson) and Grace (Davida Williams) are friends with Cassie while the third girl Marie (Augie Duke) supplies us with internal conflict.

Cassie's mom Joyce (Maeve Quinlan) doesn't trust the FBI investigating the case and ventures out on her own to save her daughter. Maeve Quinlan is the perennial TV mom who reminded he way too much of the made for TV movie mom. Rosa Blasi plays the overly stiff FBI investigator armed with slo-mo swagger music and a set of 38s.

The main actors were acceptable, but the support cast was simply bad. The made for TV script was bland heighten by moments of mock drama. A film for the younger generation.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.

A suspense-gem waiting to be discovered
Yeah, I know: Why would you watch a movie with such a cheesy title? That's what I thought! I rented it out of boredom, and guess what: THIS MOVIE ROCKS!!!

Seriously! It reminded me of Spielberg's 1st movie "Duel". This flick here had me and my wife nail-biting throughout the whole time.

There are plenty of good story twists, nail-biting suspense and intelligent dialogue that will keep you entertaint the whole time. The actors are great, considering that this isn't a blockbuster movie.

I would also consider this a "clean" movie that you can watch with your teens. Once or twice you'll hear the "b-word", and about as often they mention that are "scre..". That's it! (Sorry: No nudity, blasphemy etc.)

Go grab your popcorn and enjoy the ride!

...maybe the ATM machine was broke...
One morning three masked bandits storm the Palm Vista Bank. They steal a cool million, shoot an armored truck guard, and take hostage a 17-year-old bank teller (Abbie Cobb). When the kidnapped girl's mom (Maeve Quinlan) - who happens to be the bank's branch manager - learns that the FBI suspects her daughter as an "insider" participant in the robbery, she goes about rescuing her on her own. The movie's biggest W.T.F. twist surfaces when the abducted teen finds out that one of the bank robbers is her rich best friend Abbie (Cassi Thomson). Would it surprise you to know that, really, the main protagonist isn't the kidnapped girl or her mom?

TEENAGE BANK HEIST premiered on Lifetime in 2012 and, going by its title, may fool folks into thinking it's a teen comedy. But, no, it's a straight-up modest thriller and worth watching if you catch it on the telly. But if you expect the movie to regale you with the planning of the heist and the recruiting of the crew, well, those aren't...
